Last Outdoor Market of the Season – this Saturday at 9am!

I don't know about you, but this market season has FLOWN BY FAST. In hindsight, all the MNCup work we did during the last six months made life move at light speed. There was no stopping to smell the flowers this summer, tell you what! All the reason why this weekend comes as a bit of a surprise: It's the last market of the season?! Where did it all go? Holy cow, when did that happen? What month is it again?

As much as I'd like to deny it, it's true – this Saturday from 9 am - 1 pm will be our last outdoor market of the season at Mill City Farmers Market. As always, we'll feature all our favorite strands, including a few new ones. But here's your official encouragement to come and stock up, as our next (winter market) appearance won't be till mid-November.

The Grain That Tastes Like Wheat, but Grows Like a Prairie Grass

If you've always wanted to learn the in-depth history of Kernza (starting 12,000 years ago, kind of depth), this is a great read in this week's The Nation magazine. Featuring Minnesota's very own, Tracy Singleton, of the Birchwood Cafe, the article details the life and arc of Kernza and the nationwide pioneers working with it.

SEPTEMBER 20 – MNCup Division Final – Results

Well friends, while we made it to the FINALS (!), our time is done with the MNCup. Sad trombone! Jeff and I pitched for the division finals yesterday and were sad to come in 3rd place. (Although, I like to say that we were the 1st 3rd-placer.) Second place went to Squarrel Cooperage, a really clever company that will be moving to Minnesota soon to sell their square barrels, distill and collaborate with Dashfire Bitters. Keep your eye out! And the winner in our division was Autonomous Tractor – a company with a lot of potential for our farms and environment. We'll definitely be seeing big things from them in the future. We’d LOVE to see them win the entire prize. Fingers crossed!

Overall, the experience was huge, and … well, hard. We learned a lot and got to meet some pretty amazing people along the way. The biggest win in our books! Onward!

Dumpling & Strand is in the MNCup Finals!

Last night was fairy-tale making. Honestly. As semi-finalists, we pitched alongside nine other amazing startups for a chance to be one of the three finalists in the MNCup. The pitches were inspiring – never have I seen such a wide variety of businesses, business models and visions for the future of MN food and ag. VERY fun night. It felt like after each pitch, I would lean over to Jeff and say “Whoa. That was big. They’re moving on. Definitely.” So as I was recording the reveal, it came as SUCH a surprise to hear our names called as one of the three finalists. (So much so that I obviously didn’t record anything past our name!)

As an aside, we're crushing on Angie Bastian from BoomChickaPop. As the emcee of the night (she’s the one at the podium), she had us all roaring with her charismatic wit. (If you haven’t tried her popcorn yet, get on that. And then rabbithole a bit on her story. Another inspirational Minnesotan.)

Moving forward over the next month, we'll share the stage with the other two finalists, Autonomous Tractor Corp and Squarrel Cooperage. Both really smart products, really smart businesses, and really smart people. We can’t wait to get to know them and see where this wacky adventure keeps taking (all of) us!

Jeff and I are elated with the idea that this wee start up has big enough “noodles” to move ahead in such a tough competition. The next month is going to put us – and the business – to the test. We may ask for more help as we move along – from reviews to surveys to lots of cocktails (wink). We feel so luck to be surrounded by this big community of support. We can’t thank you enough.

Let’s do this!
